A small singing bird-in-cage, by Bontems

A small singing bird-in-cage, by Bontems,

Circa 1920,

Going-barrel movement,

With a song for the spring...

When wound by captive key-wind from underside and start/stop lever moved to position, the perched bird moves metal beak, head and tailfeather to continuous synchronised birdsong.
The bird with beautifully layered plumage in red and black sits on a brass T perch with brown velvet base and under a circular domed cage with hoop and boss top. The cage frame has a gilt intermediate band, on pressed gilt metal base with a double floral swag helix before baulle frieze.

12.1/2in. high - (31.7cm)

Point of interest -

A very clean and richly gilt metal cage which is the result of a very gentle clean and keeping out of harm's way.  The biggest enemy of singing bird cages is dust and this looks to be one of the finest examples where the two have been kept firmly apart since day one.
