A fine Viennese gilt metal and signed pictorial enamel piano-form musical box and stool

A fine Viennese gilt metal and signed pictorial enamel piano-form musical box and stool,

Swiss movement

mid 20th century,

tickle my ivories and admire my enamels...

When wound with captive winding key on underside and the main lid opened, the first of two airs begins to play, coming to an end when the lid is closed.  Free-standing stool accompanies to complete the piece.

The frame of very well detailed and chased gilt metal, with lattice edge for enamel panel mountings, all sides with slender pierced lozenges backed with red silk for sound escape, moulded urns and swag details, rope twist lid prop stilt.

Interior with compartment to hold jewellery or keepsakes, lined in rich red velvet, lid interior of smart plain gilt metal.
The main lid enamel signed LB, with the enamel study of full frame of two young lovers within a small woodland glade, glancing lovingly into each other's eyes in the shade of a mature oak tree, signed with monogram bottom left where the country path starts to home into view, enhanced by the glow of light radiating from behind the two winged putti against a sun beamed sky, holding ribbons and scores, depicted across the full length of the shaped keyboard lid, raised on shaped baluster supports with lyre form bracket for pedals.
With a matching piano stool of circular form, with another enamel panel to seat of a further pair of lovers within a country setting, framed in gilt metal and raised on S scrolled legs.

size - 5.1/2in. front to back depth, 4in. keyboard length.

Point of Interest -

The last one of these we had the blessing of handling did not stay with us long.  Both decorative and practical, these musical piano-form boxes to the Viennese school are very sought after and it is not surprising once one sees the very warm colours used for the fine studies and the understanding of the technique of managing such a feat on panels which have shaped edges and curved profiles.

One of the musical airs played is the famous Blue Danube.

The stool is a lovely touch - a fitting finish to a superb model.  This is the first Viennese musical piano form musical box which is signed which Douglas Fisher has handled.  And probably the only for a while.  Welcome to the Strauss of musical boxes...
